TOP DRAGSTER DIVISION
NHRA Top Dragster competitor Danny Nelson of Batesville, Arkansas made the trip north to Indianapolis, Indiana Labor Day weekend. And in the end it was worth every mile of travel as Nelson captured the title in the Top Dragster Division at the 66th annual NHRA U.S. Nationals.
Nelson qualified his Racecraft Chassis dragster, which he is the builder and designer, to the number 10 position. A total of 38 Top Dragsters where on hand at Indianapolis this year to attempt to qualify for the 32 car field.
The first round of competition saw Nelson match up with Mark Jones of Marrero, Louisiana. Nelson got the win as well as getting past Afton Swanson of Denver, Iowa in the second round.
In the semifinal round Nelson matched up with Darian Boesch of New Orleans Louisiana. The race proved to be an exciting one all the way to the stripe, as Nelson won on a double breakout. Nelson went .005 under at 6.155 at 222.95 mph, while Boesch went .029 under at 6.201 at 206.57 mph.
This allowed Nelson to advance to final round action, where he squared off against J. B. Strassweg of Evansville Indiana. The decision on the win was granted at the starting line as Strassweg left early, red lighting his chances away.
Nelson went .006 on the tree, and shut the engine off early as the win light came on in his lane after leaving the starting line. This allowed Nelson to begin the spoils of celebration before he reached the finish line.
